Sometimes the best resource packs are the ones that don’t try to completely reinvent Minecraft, and Cuboids Resource Pack is a good example of that approach. After playing with it for a while, I found that it gives the game a brighter, more cheerful personality while keeping the familiar blocky style intact. Released in late 2021 for Minecraft Java Edition, Cuboids stays at the lightweight 16x resolution, so you get a noticeable visual refresh without the heavy performance cost that comes with most HD packs. The overall look is colorful and slightly cartoonish, but it still feels like Minecraft rather than a completely different game.
A lot of the improvement comes from the way the colors and everyday textures have been handled. Dirt, sand, grass, leaves, wood, stone, ores, crates, doors, and several other blocks receive cleaner and more colorful designs. Some of the changes are subtle, while others are much easier to notice, particularly on things like wet farmland and certain plant textures. Weapons and armor have also been given brighter designs, and the same treatment carries over into the interface. Item icons are easier to distinguish, the Minecraft font looks cleaner, and the HUD uses brighter colors for things such as health and experience. I especially liked the lighter hotbar because items are easier to pick out quickly during normal gameplay.
From a performance perspective, Cuboids is one of the easier packs to recommend for older hardware. Since it uses 16x textures and doesn’t rely on complicated custom features, it should have very little effect on your normal FPS when used by itself. It can also be installed manually without needing OptiFine or MCPatcher. Shaders can make the pack look even better, but they obviously add their own performance cost, so I’d leave them off if you’re mainly interested in smooth gameplay or PvP. One thing to remember is that Cuboids was still considered a work in progress, meaning some Minecraft textures may remain unfinished or missing depending on the version. The listed compatibility covers Minecraft 1.16 through 1.19.1, so it’s mainly suited to players running those older versions.
Cuboids is compatible with all of the following Minecraft versions: 1.19.1 – 1.19 – 1.18.2 – 1.18.1 – 1.18 – 1.17.1 – 1.17 – 1.16.5 – 1.16.4 – 1.16.3 – 1.16.2 – 1.16.1 – 1.16
