If there's one thing there are plenty of, it's photorealistic resource packs. There is no shortage of photorealistic texture packs for Minecraft, making it quite difficult to pick one to play and stick with it. BackyardCraft resource pack is one such example of a photorealistic resource pack that has several things that make it recommended. One interesting aspect of BackyardCraft is that its textures are not so smooth and flawless. They are intentionally made to be imperfect. The developer of the resource pack bluntly and truthfully stated that our real world is never so clean and smooth. BackyardCraft enhances Minecraft visuals with higher resolution and new textures, but maintains a degree of robustness. The problem with many other photorealistic resource sets is that they add perfectly smooth textures, symmetrical patterns and design, when in reality the symmetry and smoothness of the surfaces is considered artificial and unnatural. To achieve this level of realism based on imperfect but high-resolution textures, the developer has changed most of the textures in Minecraft. There are new textures for water, clouds, sky, trees, leaves, sand, gravel, dirt, rocks, bricks and more.

While the textures are used on the same boxy models, the visual enhancements make the resource pack amazing from a visual perspective. When looking at the textures up close, you can notice small imperfections that are added on purpose. Unfortunately, there haven't been any major updates to the resource pack in several years. Released in 2014, BackyardCraft has received constant updates for several years. The developer continued to add new textures or replace old ones for all versions of the resource pack. BackyardCraft is available in 64x, 128x, 256x and 512x texture resolutions. Depending on what your computer can handle, you may want to switch between them to get the best balance between visuals and performance. Although the 64x version can replace the classic textures, it does not represent a significant visual improvement. For noticeable visual upgrades, the minimum recommended version is 128x. The 256x and 512x versions may experience some performance degradation for players with older systems. The resource pack can only be installed using tools such as MCPatcher or Optifine which allow all features such as alternate blocks, sky textures or mobs. You will also need one of these tools to install the shader pack. The developer recommends using a shader pack like Continuum to get the most out of BackyardCraft.
