Canvas Resource Pack 1.17 / 1.16

With the slogan “Minecraft in Brush”. Canvas Resource Pack is everything you could want from a faithful style pack. It's probably one of the resource packs with the most work, which is pretty obvious once you start playing with it. If you feel like Minecraft just needs a little tweaking, then Canvas is just what you need. There is one main thing that sets this resource pack apart from the hundreds of bona fide resources on the market – its artist Gealx3 does everything by hand, hand painting the textures using an image editor. The amount of detail and attention put into each texture is astounding, and it's no wonder that all the pieces fit together perfectly once combined in-game. Probably the biggest surprise is the seamless connection of blocks of different types. It's the result of the precise hand design that you won't find anywhere else that has brought this pack its popularity. It's hard to imagine improving the textures of common blocks like clay or stone. However, when you try the package, you will be immediately surprised. All of these textures have a whole new level of depth. Each stone block has 4 or 5 different shades of gray which makes it look almost 3D. The ores themselves seem to be embedded in each stone piece, giving cave diving a whole new charm. This unique experience also extends to the instruments, as they have all been overhauled to make them smoother, sharper and more pleasing to the eye. Despite the improvements, Canvas manages not to overdo it, instead keeping the game as vanilla as possible. As you can guess, the Overworld wasn't the only dimension that got an overhaul. Preparing a portal to the Nether will open up a whole new world that looks significantly better. Its main building elements – lava, fire and Netherrack – are more faithful than before.

Netherrack has been given a similar treatment to a cobblestone with cleverly implemented shadows between individual stones to make it stand out. Even the blackstone of the bastion was modified to give the structure a more dramatic appearance. If you want to appreciate the effort that went into these designs, the developer posted a video of him working on the Blackstone texture for a whopping 3 hours! No stone was left unturned in the pack, including mobs, armor and weapons. Both friendly and hostile have been tweaked, but the changes are minor, so you'll probably only notice fewer pixels on them. As for the swords, they don't have those ugly zigzag lines anymore. Instead, they are completely smooth with a much longer blade than on the original textures. The armor is shinier than before, with the biggest difference seen in the chain mail, which is now almost fully transparent. Another welcome but less noticeable modification concerns the art. All images have been updated to include more detail, but still retain the same theme as the default. In terms of performance and requirements, the Canvas resource pack is very flexible due to the unique process by which the textures are created. The developer first takes the vanilla texture and scales it to 32×32 resolution. It is then scaled down to 256×256, which is used as the base on which it performs its adjustments. As a result, this resource set is available in x64, x128, and x256 versions. If your computer can run regular Minecraft with a decent FPS, chances are you'll be able to use at least the lowest possible resolution without issue. The package doesn't seem to require Optifine to work properly, but it's still better to install it just in case. If nothing else, it will squeeze a few extra FPS out of it. Although the developer seems to have stopped updating the pack for a while, it remains one of the most popular packs loyal to the Minecraft community today. More than 7 years of work is clearly visible in each block, making it hard to find fault. Do yourself a favor and try this unique resource pack.
